Pretty Pop
There's an old Howlin' Wolf blues song that contains the line "The men don't know, but the little girls understand." Such is the case with American Chinese pop heart-throb Wang Leehom. He has boy-next-door charm, a gentle manner and a healthy physique. It all adds up to hordes of adoring female fans and at least an equal number of guys who just can't understand the attraction.

To quote Wang: "My biggest goal is to compose music and hope it will bring the audience inspiration for life". Mostly, it seems he inspires them to scream and scream again - as they will doubtless also do at his upcoming Shanghai Stadium concert.

To pursue this goal, he went to Taiwan and released a first album, Love Rival Beethoven (no, we don't know what it means, either), that got more attention for the way he looked in the cover pictures than for the music.

However, his follow-up albums showed more of his musical talents. His Revolution album, which was released in 1998, sold over 100,000 copies in its first week of release.

"I'm a huge fan of Wang Leehom, he's so handsome and talented," gushed Wu Jianjian, a 22-year-old female student.

Wang's first concert in Shanghai will see him sing his trademark songs such as 'Julia', 'Miss You So Much' and 'Revolution' but also show off his versatility, playing piano and drums, as well as a violin duo with Lara St John.

"I'd love to go! But as a student I can only afford a seat so far back that I can't even see my idol," sighed Wu. Sounds like an opportunity there - for a non-jealous date, of course.
